In a heart-wrenching turn of events, around 100 elephants were rescued from the Elephant Nature Park in northern Thailand after severe flash floods hit the region. Tragically, two elephants lost their lives during the evacuation, highlighting the critical situation faced by both the animals and the dedicated staff.
The Flood Crisis
On October 3, 2024, relentless rainfall caused the Ping River, which runs through Chiang Mai, to overflow, resulting in flash floods that swept across the sanctuary. Saengduean “Lek” Chailert, the founder of the Elephant Nature Park, described the flooding as the worst the sanctuary has ever experienced.
“We had to evacuate quickly as the water rose rapidly,” Lek said. Dramatic videos captured staff urging elephants through the floodwaters, demonstrating the urgency of the situation. While many elephants found refuge on higher ground, the danger was far from over.

Despite successful evacuations, 13 adult elephants remained trapped in their quarters, causing alarm among the sanctuary staff. One of the deceased elephants was Ploy Thong, who was blind and unable to escape the rising waters. “My heart is broken,” Lek shared. “They were swept away by floodwaters before my eyes.”
